Bird Hike for Kids (Ages 7-13): Journey into the woods with our naturalist to find and identify different species of Illinois birds! Parents/guardians are welcome to tag along, although we'll be focusing on kids and their bird-related questions and ideas. Binoculars are available.Location: Forest Park Nature Center

Hawktober Hawk Watch (Ages 10+): Early autumn is a traditional time for hawk migration in central Illinois and we'll scan the skies for red-tailed broad-winged, and sharp-shinned hawks, falcons, eagles, and other birds of prey. Situated on top of the Illinois RIver bluffs, Tawney Oaks is an ideal spot for soaring birds. Bring binoculars if you have them, or use some we have on hand.Location: Tawny Oaks

Hummingbird Garden Day: Come to Sommer Park South and enjoy the Hummingbird Garden. Bring a lawn chair, binoculars, and a camera to observe these tiny birds. Fill out a bird observation sheet, draw flowers and birds you see, and chat with Park Staff.Location: Sommer Park South

An Introduction to Backyard Bird Watching: Bird watching is a wonderful way to relax and learn about the natural world. We'll go over the basics for learning how to bird watch, followed by a brief hike to spot some birds in the woods.Location: Forest Park Nature Center

Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow (Ages 10+): WHile often abundant, native sparrows are notorious for being some of the most difficult birds to spot and identify, so here's your chance to learn them. Bring along your binoculars and field guides as we head out into the prairie with the goal of finding 10 species of native sparrows. We have binoculars to lend. All levels of experience are welcome.Location: Tawny Oaks

Magnificent Monarchs and Their Kin: Learn about butterfly life cycles and ways to identify common Illinois species. Then, get up close with butterflies on a short hike following the presentation.Location: Forest Park Nature Center

Songbird Mania (Ages 16+): April and May are prime months for migrating songbirds and we get'em in droves at Tawney Oaks. We're starting early, but these little birds came from Central America to see us, and morning is when we hear their lively songs. It's a great time to dust off the binoculars and brush up on the bird songs.Location: Tawny Oaks

Mid-morning Warbler Walks (Ages 10+): We'll set a leisurely pace along some level paths in hope of finding wood warblers and additional songbirds during Illinois' fall migration. Bring along some binoculars if you have them and maybe a few friends as more eyes are better when trying to spot these quiet, tiny birds. If you lack binoculars, we will have some on hand to lend, and of course, all levels of experience are welcome.Location: Tawny Oaks
